How Music Training Can Also Help Develop Communication Skills

Reading ability, language development, and skills we use to communicate have something major in common. They are all related to our ability to process sound.

The more developed a child’s auditory system, the better she or he can process sound. This, in turn, can have other positive benefits, such as improved speech. A great way to encourage audio system development is through music education.

The Power of Music

There have been studies that examined the difference in language and other skills between adult musicians and non musicians. There is also evidence that the brains of musicians are physically different. A recent USC study explored the possible reasons why these differences exist. Is it genetic? Or something that develops over time?

Researchers at the Brain and Creativity Institute of the University of Southern California studied music’s effects on childhood brain development. They started with three groups of kids, all ages 6 to 7. One group then began musical training. One group began sports training. And one group didn’t begin any kind of special training.

After two years of study, the researchers found that the children in the music training group had an advantage. Their auditory processing abilities were maturing the fastest of the three groups. In fact, their processing abilities were getting faster, while the others’ weren’t.

Not only is music offered as an elective, it is also included as a part of lessons each day. From the basics of rhythm to actual songwriting, students get regular chances to learn about music. They also get to perform songs and more—if they want.

It appeared that music training was the key.

Given the study’s findings, many parents may want to be sure their child is involved in music somehow.
