Understanding Peanut Allergies
Peanut allergies, and nut allergies in general, continue to be all around us. Especially for those of us with school age children. If your child does not have a nut allergy, it is likely that someone in their class does. Understanding peanut allergies is important even if nobody in your family suffers from them. What can be just an inconvenience for your family when it comes to packing school lunches, can be literally a life changing issue for other families.
Food allergies can run the gamut from mild to severe. Mild could mean a rash. Severe could mean airway obstructing swelling that requires emergency medical intervention. This is the reason why food allergies are such a big deal, especially in the school setting right now.
Innovation Academy prides itself on being Las Vegas’ first and only 100% food allergy safe school. IA caters all the school snacks and meals from local Vegas restaurants. Those restaurants prepare customized meals for our students that are 100% allergy safe, based on the allergies list we provide them. This means that students with food allergies don’t have to be segregated from their classmates during mealtime. And students without food allergies don’t have to worry about packing (or not packing) certain foods or snacks.
An Inclusive and Safe Environment
Innovation Academy creates an inclusive and safe environment for our students. This begins with creating understanding. Here is a link to an excellent and informative article about peanut allergies, from our friends at Positive Health Wellness. This is an excerpt from the article that speaks to this exact situation:
The most severe cases will involve where people breathe in the particles and suffer from allergic reactions. This is most common in enclosed spaces, such as restaurants and schools, hence the reason for some schools to be completely peanut free. The schools and restaurants will need to be alerted if there is such a severe allergic reaction to the ingredient. Restaurants may not be able to do anything, which can be distressing for the sufferer.
Schools banning all peanut products has become a debate among parents. Some parents don’t understand why their children are being banned from bringing in peanut products, and why the sufferer can’t eat somewhere else to avoid allergic reactions.-“PositiveHealthWellness“
