Why Having Courage Matters
Students at Innovation Academy learn about character traits that will strengthen who they are, who they want to be, and how they can make a difference in the lives around them. For Courage Day, our students are learning how having courage makes you a better student, person, and friend.
What is Courage?
Many young children relate “courage” to their favorite stories’ hero. Maybe it was the brave knight who slayed the beastly dragon…or maybe they see courage in heroic Firefighters who bravely rush into a building to help others. One common misconception about courage is that in order to be courageous, you must have no fear.
In fact, what IA students are learning is that courage is not the absence of fear, it is the presence of bravery and perseverance in the face of fear. Fear of injury, fear of failure, fear of not being accepted…all of these things exist for even the most courageous of heroes.
“Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear – not absence of fear.” – Mark Twain
For young children, examples of courage are seen every day: trying to solve math equation for the first time, defending a friend from bullying, speaking in front of the class. Maybe the biggest act of courage for any of us to face, is the courage to be ourselves. These examples may not have the glory of “slaying a dragon”, but rest assured that these acts take a great deal of courage for a young child. Innovation Academy believes in teaching our students that even seemingly small acts of courage are important.
Acts of Courage
For Courage Day, Innovation Academy challenged our students with a special obstacle course. One student was blindfolded, while another student was tasked with leading their blindfolded partner through the playground and obstacle course! The blindfolded student had to overcome fear of the unknown and fear of injury, and call on all their courage to trust that their partner would not lead them astray, while the partner had to overcome fear of failure, fear of letting down their friend. Quite a challenge indeed!
